Many of them are located directly by the sea in the shade of dense pine forests.
But sun, sea and beach are by no means all that Istria has to offer. Because of its distinctive natural landscape and unique combination of seaside holidays and picturesque hilltop villages, it is often referred to as a little Tuscany. With an average of 2,400 hours of sunshine a year and a Mediterranean climate along the coast, you can’t go wrong with Istria as a holiday destination. Thanks to its location in the north of the country and excellent transport links, Istria is also very easy to reach.

Of the total of 22 ADAC Super Campsites that Croatia can boast until 2023, 13 are located in Istria. And not without reason: the campsites in Istria are excellently equipped and offer many facilities for a relaxing camping holiday. Campsites with swimming pools are particularly popular, and the larger ones even have entire aqua parks. This means lots of water fun and endless hours of entertainment for your children.
And when you’ve had enough of the pool, the sea is usually just a stone’s throw away. Istria, like the rest of Croatia, has very clean beaches. Proof of this is the fact that most beaches in Istria have been awarded the Blue Flag, an international symbol for clean sea, environmental protection and beach facilities. So nothing stands in the way of your camping holiday with the family.
If you’re camping in Istria and want to take your four-legged friend with you, there’s no need to worry. Pets are welcome at most campsites in Istria. Dogs are man’s best friend and part of the family, so it’s natural to take them on holiday with you. Istrian campsites have many exercise areas, walking paths and often a special beach where you can swim with your dog.
In addition, many campsites in Istria are located close to towns, which can be easily reached via the coastal promenade or the tourist train. A good example is the Aminess Sirena campsite near Novigrad. Here you can enjoy peace and quiet during the day and take a relaxing family walk in the evening – with your dog, of course.
Mobile homes are an increasingly popular type of accommodation for camping in Istria. They offer a lot of comfort, are usually designed for 4+2 guests, have bedrooms with comfortable beds, bathrooms and a covered terrace with a dining table and deckchairs. This allows you to enjoy all the advantages of a campsite while maximising comfort. They are often located in secluded areas or settlements within the campsites, where there is a pool, playgrounds and plenty of entertainment – and probably most importantly, no traffic is allowed. If you are travelling with younger children, this can be a great advantage.
And if you want to take the camping experience one step further, glamping is an ideal option. The glamping tents in Istrian campsites are very modern and offer everything you need for a relaxing holiday while enjoying direct contact with nature and sleeping in the open air. Particularly recommended for all types of campers is the Park Polidor campsite near Funtana. Here you will find attractive pitches close to the sea, various types of mobile homes with modern facilities and their own whirlpool or unique glamping tents for a different kind of camping experience.
Poreč is one of the most popular destinations for campers in Istria – a place with a history that is second to none. The campsites in and around Poreč are particularly impressive due to their facilities, but also because of their offer for an active holiday. Cycling and hiking trails are easily accessible from all campsites. You will also find numerous taverns, restaurants and agritourisms in Poreč, where you can not only experience Istria, but also savour it.
Narrow cobbled streets, galleries and museums. Rovinj is the city of artists and will enchant you with its beauty. A postcard of the colourful houses, which from a distance appear to be immersed in the sea, will make your loved ones and friends at home envious. The campsites in Rovinj, such as Campsite Veštar or Campsite Polari, are ideal for a relaxing family holiday, as they offer first-class facilities as well as plenty of nature and peace and quiet.
The largest city in Istria with one of the most famous sights in Croatia. The Arena of Pula is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. Today it serves as an important cultural centre and venue for many concerts and festivals. The campsites in Pula are located along the indented coast near the most beautiful beaches in Istria.

Istrian gastronomy is well known. But sometimes you will park your motorhome and not necessarily feel like leaving the campsite. But you don’t have to. In many campsites in Istria you will find numerous restaurants, bars and taverns where you can sample all the best that Istria has to offer.
Be sure to try the local cheese with prosciutto, the trademark of Istria. However, if you want to experience Istria to the full, we recommend a trip to the interior of the peninsula. This is where the real hidden treasures lie, in the truest sense of the word. Discover the many hilltop towns that will enchant you not only with their historical tradition but also with their breathtaking views. The best examples of this are Buzet and Motovun, two small towns that you should definitely visit. Here you can taste the black truffle and if you are adventurous you can even go on a truffle hunt. On this occasion, you can search for the hidden treasure accompanied by specially trained dogs.
Of course, a drop of olive oil is a must. Istria has been voted the best olive oil region in the world by the well-known olive oil guide Flos Olei for the 8th time in a row. And there is a good reason for this. Don’t miss one of the numerous wine cellars in Istria and taste autochthonous varieties such as Istrian Malvasia or Teran. Bon appetit!
If you are looking for an active holiday, there is no better choice than Istria. Especially on two wheels, Istria looks particularly enticing. The many cycle paths along the coast or through the small inland towns will tempt you to stay active every day. Particularly recommended is the Parenzana, a former train route that has been converted into an attractive cycle route and attracts many cycling enthusiasts on the way from Poreč to Trieste.
There are a few water parks in Croatia and two of them are located in Istria. Lucky you – treat your children to a day at Aquapark Istralandia near Novigrad or Aquacolors near Poreč. One thing is for sure – when you return to the campsite in the evening, you will fall asleep with a smile on your face.
