Rab cake – the sweetest piece of Rab’s heritage

If you are spending your summer on the island of Rab, tasting local delicacies such as brudet and Kvarner scampi, be sure to also try a piece of Rab cake. This dessert is a symbol of the island of Rab and is recognisable by its spiral shape. It consists of several layers of sponge with almonds, walnuts, lemon and orange peel and spices such as cinnamon, and the recipe dates back to 1177. Legend has it that in that year Pope Alexander III took refuge from a storm on the island of Rab, and the Benedictine nuns from the monastery of St. Andrija prepared the cake for him. The original recipe is still preserved in the same monastery.

The dessert has become part of the cultural identity of Rab, where it is still prepared on holidays, birthdays and other special occasions, and traditionally takes up to three days to prepare. If you want to learn more about its history, don’t miss the House of Rab Cake (Kuća rabske torte) in the old town of Rab when you go sightseeing. Before you start planning your itinerary, don’t forget to book one of our pitches or mobile homes in the middle of the Mediterranean landscape. In such an ambience you will be in the perfect spot to explore Rab’s unique gems, including the delicious Rab cake.
