Antiquity in Mali Lošinj: The Museum of Apoxyomenos

When you visit Mali Lošinj, don’t miss a visit to the museum dedicated to only one spectacular exhibit – the ancient bronze statue of the young athlete Apoxyomenos, found in the sea near the island. The Museum of Apoxyomenos will delight you with the way it takes you through the history of this ancient sculpture, but also with the impressive visual effects of each chapter of the story.

The sculpture was made in the 1st or 2nd century B.C. and depicts a young athlete cleaning himself of oil, sweat and sand after a competition. In 1997, a Belgian tourist and diver accidentally found it at a depth of 45 metres. After several attempts, it was finally brought out of the sea in 1999. It was then transported to Zagreb, where it was restored for six years. The statue has been on display in the most important museums in the world, such as the Louvre and the British Museum, and is now back on Lošinj.

The statue of Apoxiomenos has been on display in the Lošinj museum since 2016 – the museum is not only a tribute to this precious ancient sculpture, but is also an ode to the beauty of the island of Lošinj. Plan a visit to this and many other hidden gems on the island of Lošinj by choosing a spot at one of our campsites.
