Historical gems in the city center

Split began to develop as a Greek colony called Aspálathos, but the Roman Emperor Diocletian is often referred to as its true founder. Around the year 300, he built the imperial residence. Over time, it was transformed into the Split of today. This residence, one of the best-preserved Roman complexes in the world, is now known as Diocletian’s Palace. The old city center of Split, including the palace, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.

The palace covers an area of almost 40,000 square meters, and the people of Split still live in it today. Inside the palace there are numerous valuable historical and cultural sights from the Roman period – the main square of the palace, the Peristyle, the Temple of Jupiter and Diocletian’s Cellars are just some of them. The cellars are famous as a filming location for the Game of Thrones series. However, the biggest highlight is undoubtedly the Cathedral of St Domnius, with its bell tower offering a wonderful view of the whole city, as the icing on the cake at the end of the palace tour.

Book a spacious pitch or mobile home at our campsite and explore all the historical and natural gems of Dalmatia’s largest city – only a 15-minute drive from the centre of Split.
