Witnessing history – Šibenik Fortresses

The wealth of historical treasures preserved in the town centre is a source of pride for the people of Šibenik. Apart from the Cathedral of St. James, the most important monuments of the past are the four historical fortresses. The St. Nicholas’ Fortress is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and was built in the 16th century when the city was under the rule of Venice. Its location is unique – it is situated on the islet of Ljuljevac, and a fairytale promenade connects it to the old town.

The Barone Fortress dates back to the 17th century, and it is here that the past and the future meet, thanks to an augmented reality system that allows you to see how the city looked four centuries ago. The next stop is the St. Micheal’s Fortress, the oldest of the four, built in the 11th century. It offers a beautiful view of the Šibenik Bay and in the summer it becomes a cultural centre and a unique concert venue.

Finally, we reach the recently renovated St. John’s fortress, the highest fortress at 115 metres above sea level. What makes it so special is that it was built in just 58 days as a defence against the Ottoman Turks. Its star shape attracts visitors’ attention and it was also a filming location for the Game of Thrones series.

Take a look at what we have to offer and plan your holiday in magical Šibenik, whether you want to explore the historical gems of the old town or simply enjoy the pebble beach at our campsite.
