The island of Lošinj – island of vitality, island of dolphins, fragrant island. There are many names given to this (truly) special island, but the only way to experience its uniqueness in full is to see it for yourself. Otherwise, you won’t believe us. So, we invite you to visit it.
We have visited and can confirm that it is truly wonderful. The emerald green sea and the pine-scented air are just two of the many treasures this island has to offer. Every walk or bike ride becomes a form of therapy, which is why Lošinj is an ideal destination for an active vacation.
In this article, (in addition to our enthusiasm for the island 🤭), you will find practical tips and recommendations for your stay on Lošinj. So, without further ado – let’s get started.
You can reach Lošinj by car (or camper) with ferry from 2 directions: the island of Krk (Valbiska – Merag line) or Istria (Brestova – Porozina line). The journey takes about 20 minutes from either direction. A slightly less popular, and much longer (7-hour) ferry line is the one from Zadar.
Ferries run frequently, especially in the high season, so we recommend buying ticket online to avoid waiting. If you miss the ferry, each pier has a café or restaurant where you can eat or drink something while you wait for the next one.
Please note that there are 2 bridges on the island that open for vessels at certain times of the day. The Osor bridge opens at 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and the Mali Lošinj bridge opens at 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The wait can be up to 30 minutes, so plan accordingly, especially if you’re trying to catch a ferry.
Did you know that Veli Lošinj (picture on the left), despite its name “Veli” meaning “big”, is actually smaller than Mali (“little”) Lošinj?
Lošinj’s charm lies in nature, so its main attractions are those related to – nature. From viewpoints to gardens and forests, this fragrant island has it all.
Museum of Apoxyomenos – Located in the very center of Mali Lošinj. It is entirely dedicated to the statue of a young athlete that was found lying on the Lošinj seabed. Check ticket prices and opening hours here.
Lošinj’s Fragrant Garden – The garden contains more than 200 fragrant plant species, both wild and cultivated. There are also domestic animals, the most popular of which is Betty the donkey. There is also a small shop selling handicrafts and souvenirs. Check the opening hours here.
“Providenca” Viewpoint – It consists of an educational trail and a bar that serves local delicacies. The bar is very popular, so be sure to book a spot a few days in advance. The viewpoint offers a wonderful view of the Cres-Lošinj archipelago. We recommend coming before sunset because that’s when the atmosphere is truly special.
Blue World Institute – Lošinj is so beautiful that even dolphins have made it their home. There is a center in Veli Lošinj dedicated to their protection that organizes dolphin-watching tours. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of them from the beach, leisurely jumping in the distance (I once saw them from the beach Rovenska 😊).
Sea views on the Vitality Walk
To feel the real pulse of Lošinj, visit in the summer. Various shows and concerts take place in each of the island’s villages during this time, and you definitely won’t want to miss the folk festivals.
Veloselske ljetne užance – One such festival takes place in Veli Lošinj every year at the end of July. The program usually lasts 2 days. The main highlight is on the last day, when they organize Veli Lošinj’s version of the popular “alka“, called Veloselska Alka, as well as an interesting and extremely funny event – walking on a slippery pole. There is fish and wine, music, and a waterfront full of curious people.
Osor music evenings – A classical music festival that takes place in Osor every summer in July and August. The venue is the Osor Cathedral. The program is available here.
Folk festivals – These are related to religious events or patron saints. First, there is a mass, followed by an entertainment program. Some of the more famous festivals are: St. Gregory (Sv. Grgur) in Veli Lošinj on July 7, St. Mary Magdalene in Nerezine (July 22), and St. James’ Day (Sv. Jakov) in the village Sveti Jakov on July 25.
Providenca Viewpoint, Mali Lošinj
Bocca Vera, Mali Lošinj – The menu focuses on fish, but there are also meat and pizza options. It is located right on the promenade and has 2 terraces with a sea view. We recommend the homemade black pasta with shrimp.
El Paso, Mali Lošinj – A restaurant at the Lošinj airport. It has an excellent grill with fish and meat options. Everyone raves about the salad with fruit and vegetables. It is great for children because they can watch small planes take off and land. It is only open in the afternoon.
Konoba Dišpet, Mali Lošinj – A family tavern with fine fish and meat specialties. We recommend trying both the squid and the venison goulash with gnocchi. Prices are very reasonable.
Grill Toro, Mali Lošinj – A good restaurant with affordable grilled food (10-15€ per person). It also has a good selection of beers and 2 outdoor terraces.
Restaurant Mol, Veli Lošinj – An excellent restaurant for a romantic dinner. All tables have a sea view, and some are right by the water. They serve freshly caught fish.

Borik Mediterranean bar, Mali Lošinj – A bar located in Lošinj’s Sunčana Uvala, right above the beach. It has a nice terrace and amazing views of the open sea. The prices are a bit higher.
Moby Dick Gelateria, Mali Lošinj – The word is that they have the best ice cream on the island. They also have interesting homemade cakes, like the mushroom cake. You can also find them in Veli Lošinj.
Caffe Saturn, Veli Lošinj – Popular with locals and has tables right by the sea. It’s a good place to have a morning coffee or an evening cocktail or beer at an affordable price.
The combination of rocks and the deep blue sea leaves no one indifferent
On Lošinj, the focus is more on the sea than the beaches. Like the air, the sea has healing properties. Plus, its deep blue color will win you over at first sight.
Beach Veli Žal, Mali Lošinj – A beautiful pebble beach in Sunčana Uvala. There are sun loungers and parasols for rent on the pebbly part, while on the rocky side you can put down a towel and spend the whole day enjoying the shade. Above the beach is a promenade, and within the nearby hotel, there is a restaurant and a café. There are also showers and toilets. Parking is available just above the beach at the Aurora Hotel.
Čikat, Mali Lošinj – A forest park with a well-maintained promenade and numerous coves. You can swim wherever you want, except in areas designated for guests of nearby hotels. The sea is clean, the air is fragrant, and there are numerous bars and restaurants where you can get refreshments. Parking is available by the Helios Hotel.
Beach Rovenska, Veli Lošinj – It is loved by old and young, locals and tourists alike. It has a pebbled area that provides shade in the morning. Above the beach, there is a small forest with shade all day. There is also a pier ideal for sunbathing, with shade available until noon. On the other side of the pier is a dog beach. Above the beach is a café/restaurant.
Beach Zabodarski, Ćunski – A beach located in the bay of the same name near the airport. There is parking available at the entrance to the bay, but the road to it is unpaved. The beach is pebbled and has a pine forest behind it for shade. There are no additional facilities. However, the sea is beautiful. So the effort is definitely worthwhile.
Pitches at campsite Čikat and mobile homes with sea views at campsite Lopari
This quiet, peaceful campsite is ideal for those who want to fully relax. It is located in Nerezine, one of the first villages you’ll see upon arriving to the island. The campsite offers a restaurant, market, and beach bar. You can enjoy a rocky and pebble beach, as well as a dog beach. There is always a light breeze, so it never gets too hot, even in the summer. This makes the sea ideal for surfing, and there is a surf center within the campsite. As for accommodation, you can choose between shaded pitches and mobile homes in themed villages.
This popular family campsite is located in a dense pine forest. The pine trees won’t just fill the air with a pleasant scent; they’ll also provide shade throughout the day. The site has numerous facilities for all ages. The main attraction for children (but also adults) is the Aquapark Čikat. You can choose to stay on shaded pitches, in glamping tents, or in mobile homes (some with sea views). The campsite is pet-friendly.
A smaller campsite located halfway between Ćunski and Mali Lošinj. It has access to a pebble beach that is ideal for families with children. One side of the beach has rocks with concrete sections that are great for sunbathing, and the other side has pine trees for those who prefer shade. Right above the beach, you will find accommodations – sunny pitches and mobile homes in the shade of pine trees. Within the campsite, you can try various sports or rent a boat for trips to nearby islands.
