The south of Croatia has always been one of the most popular holiday destinations. In the south, the weather is more stable, the nature is more beautiful and the sea is cleaner and deeper. From the Pelješac peninsula and coastal towns to forested islands, each place is more beautiful than the last.
We know that it can be more challenging to plan a holiday to a faraway destination due to the longer journey, but trust us when we say it’s absolutely worth it. We have been and can confirm this, and we have compiled all of our experiences and impressions to share with you. Read on to find out what to see, where to eat, where to go to the beach and where to stay in the Dubrovnik region.
Even if Dubrovnik is the only place you visit during your stay in the region, it will be enough. This historic city is surrounded by nearly 2 kilometers of city walls built for defense purposes. Today, they are a popular attraction offering wonderful views of the city and the sea. Other sights include the City Hall, the birthplace of Marin Držić, and the Lovrijenac Fortress. A walk along Dubrovnik’s main street, Stradun, is also a must. And if you’re lucky, you might even come across a live performance of the famous local dance, linđo.
The most convenient and affordable way to see all the major attractions is with the Dubrovnik Pass. Click here to find out what it includes and what are the prices.
Cavtat – Unlike neighboring Dubrovnik, which is teeming with tourists year-round, Cavtat remains a peaceful gem where you can swim, enjoy delicious food, or simply take a walk while inhaling the scent of pine trees. And you can do all this without too many crowds. You can reach Cavtat by car or by city bus from Dubrovnik.
Island of Mljet – Whenever someone asks me which is my favorite Adriatic island, I always think of Mljet first. In addition to being repeatedly declared one of the most beautiful islands in the Adriatic, it is the most forested and largest southern Dalmatian island. The good news is that despite the large amount of forests, there are no snakes on Mljet (they are eaten by mongooses). While on the island, be sure to visit Odysseus’ Cave (go at noon when the sun illuminates the cave), the salt lakes (Malo and Veliko), and the islet of St. Mary. You can reach Mljet by ferry from Pelješac or by boat from Dubrovnik.
Island of Korčula – On Korčula, you can enjoy a walk through the old town protected by UNESCO, dinner by the sea, and swimming with a view of Pelješac. Be sure to book an island-hopping tour, which will give you the opportunity to visit the neighboring islands of Badija and Vrnik, as well as the nearby town of Lumbarda (it has sandy beaches). Korčula is also famous for its performances of the Moreška, a traditional sword dance. Performances are held during the summer months; see the schedule here. Food lovers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to try local homemade pasta – makaruni. You can reach Korčula by ferry from Pelješac or by catamaran from Split.
The Dubrovnik walls and Fort Lovrijenac are must-see attractions in the city
Dundo Maroje, Dubrovnik – Top restaurant right next to Stradun. The food is excellent, the staff is helpful, and the prices are very affordable considering the location. Definitely one of the cheaper, but better restaurants in the area. Go for pasta with seafood.
Taj Mahal hotel Lero, Dubrovnik – If you feel like having kebabs or real Turkish coffee while you are at the seaside, be sure to visit this restaurant. It has a nice ambiance and offers modern Balkan cuisine at affordable prices. Try the chicken kebab.
Guloso – Burgers & More, Dubrovnik – The most recommended burger bar in the city. They offer veggie and meat burgers, and you’ll receive fries with each one. It’s located right next to the Gruž harbor and the bus station.
Ludo More, Cavtat – A family restaurant that serves local cuisine made with ingredients from their own farm and other local producers. The terrace overlooks the sea and sunset, and the menu features fresh fish and creative appetizers like cod fritters (prikle) and shrimp carpaccio.
Pizzeria Pape, Korčula – A restaurant with a terrace by the sea. In addition to the view, you can enjoy their widely praised pizzas. You can also try homemade pasta makaruni here.
Maha Bar, Korčula – A lovely restaurant near the port. It has a terrace overlooking the sea and serves all kinds of fast food, including smoothies. Make sure to try potato fries and homemade iced tea.
Konoba Andiamo, Orebić – If you want delicious fish with a beautiful sea view, then this tavern is the ideal choice. Expect colorful chairs on the terrace and the softest tuna steak you have ever tasted. Sounds good, right? Be sure to book a table to get a seat.
In the area of Dubrovnik, you will find numerous attractive beach bars
Divna Beach, Pelješac – One of the most beautiful beaches on Pelješac with crystal-clear turquoise water, courtesy of the sandy seabed. You can park above the beach (rumor has it that they sometimes give out tickets, so be careful), and steps lead down to the beach. There is shade, but not much, so bring a parasol.
Vela Pržina Beach, Lumbarda – A sandy beach with no shade, so make sure to bring a parasol or tent. The sea is shallow, so it’s ideal for children and fans of picigin. On the beach, there are 2 restaurants and showers, and there is a parking lot nearby that costs 5€.
Veli Bili Bok, Proizd – Proizd is an islet that you can reach by taking a boat from Vela Luka. The ride takes about half an hour. There you will find 4 secluded beaches, the most beautiful of which is in the Veli Bili Bok bay. There is no shade on the beach, so bring a parasol. The islet also has a restaurant.
Velika Saplunara, Mljet – A sandy beach surrounded by a pine forest that provides natural shade. There is a beach bar, and you can rent SUPs, kayaks, loungers, and parasols. Right next to it is another sandy beach, Mala Saplunara.
Plat Beach, Župa dubrovačka – If you want to avoid the crowds at the popular Dubrovnik beaches Banje and Bellevue, visit the nearby coastal towns where you will find equally beautiful beaches with much fewer people. One of them is Plat, a quiet beach in the village of the same name. There is no amenities, so bring everything you need with you. You can park at the public parking lot near the beach.
Ključice Beach, Cavtat – This beach will impress you if you love rocky shore and clean water. It is located on the Rat promenade, and there are a few more beaches nearby. All of them face west, so you can enjoy swimming until sunset. There is a restaurant and beach bar nearby, and you can rent sun loungers and parasols.
