Similar to many other European countries, Slovenia and Austria use a vignette system through which motorists pay toll for the use of motorways.

From 2022, only electronic vignettes for use of motorways in Slovenia are available for all vehicles with a maximum weight of up to 3.5t. There are no physical stickers for the windscreen anymore. The vignette is linked to the registration plate number of the vehicle.

Where can you buy the vignette?

There are three options to buy the vignette for motorways in Slovenia:

1. Online, through the DARS website
2. At authorized points of sale in Slovenia: PETROL and MOL gas stations, tobacco shops TOBAČNA 3DVA, SPAR shops etc.
3. At authorized points of sale in other countries – you can find the complete list here.

When purchasing a vignette, make sure the correct registration number of the vehicle is entered either at the point of sale or on the DARS website. In case the information is incorrect, the driver may be fined in the same way as those who use motorways without buying the vignette. The fine is €300 and several fines can be issued if the control system detects serial infringements.

Vehicle control is conducted manually (by DARS employees at motorway exits) and automatically through the camera-monitored system on the motorways.

Slovenian vignette prices remain unchanged in 2025.

Toll classes

The Toll class 1 includes all motorbikes. However, classes 2A and 2B are often a source of confusion:

Motorhomes: Toll class 2A or 2B?

While according to the vehicle height above the front axle some motorhomes should fall into the 2B category, there is an exemption for them: As long as the vehicle is registered as a motorhome or campervan, it falls into the 2A category (same as cars and vans with vehicle height above the front axle under 1.3m).

If you are towing a caravan, you only need to buy one vignette; the type that suits the vehicle you are using to tow the caravan.

Vehicles (including motorhomes) with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 3.5t must use the e-DARSGO electronic toll collection system in Slovenia, which requires registration and use of a DarsGo electronic card for toll payment.

Vignette validity

The annual vignette is valid for exactly one year since the day of purchase. Example: If you buy it on 15 January 2025, it stays valid until midnight on 15 January 2026.

The monthly vignette is valid from the start date selected by the user until the end of the same day in the following month. Example: If you select 15 January 2025 as the start date, you may use it until midnight on 15 February 2025.

The weekly vignette is valid for seven consecutive days from its validity start date selected by the customer, with the first day of validity included. Example: If you purchase a weekly vignette and select Wednesday, 15 January 2025 as its validity start date, you can use it until midnight on Tuesday, 21 January 2025.

Vignette system in Austria

Austria has a similar toll system as Slovenia, with vignettes required for all vehicles of up to 3.5t of gross vehicle mass. Driving without one will result in a minimum 300 € fine. Check this map to see which roads require a vignette.

Validity

The validity of Austrian vignette is either 1 day, 10 days, 2 months or 1 year (exact validity cut-off time is the same as for Slovenian vignettes). The vignettes come in either digital or physical form (sticker), except for the 1-day vignette which is only digital.

The sticker vignette can be purchased at over 6000 points of sale throughout Austria and abroad. Make sure you follow the instructions when attaching the vignette sticker to your windscreen.

While the validity of shorter-term vignettes depends on the day of the purchase, the annual vignette has a fixed validity: Regardless of the day of purchase, it is valid until the 31 January of the following year.

Also note that the digital 2-month and annual vignettes are only valid from the 18th day after purchase!

Prices

As you can see on the map linked above some parts of the motorways are painted green: On those stretches (called Streckenmaut) there is an additional toll charged for each single trip.

Here are the prices of surcharges:

A13 Brenner motorway: 11 € per trip

A10 Tauern motorway: 13.5 € per trip

S16 Arlberg expressway: 11.5 € per trip

A11 Karawanken motorway: 8.2 € per trip

A9 Pyhrn motorway:

• Bosruck and Gleinalm: 17 € per trip
• Gleinalm: 10.5 € per trip
• Bosruck: 6,5 € per trip

Vehicles with GVM of over 3.5t (including large motorhomes) must pay the toll via the mileage-based GO-toll system.
