Watch Barcolana 56 from campsite Mare Pineta, Sistiana

Regata Barcolana

The campsite Mare Pineta in Sistiana invites you to camp and watch the Barcolana sailing regatta, which will take place on Sunday, 13 October 2024 at 10:30. Take advantage of out-of-season accommodation prices and come see the regatta, visit the Duino Castle and walk along the Rilke Trail.

This will be the 56th edition of the Barcolana race. Over 1500 participants take part in the race each year which usually takes a little under 2 hours to complete. The participants will race from the start line to 4 fixed points (buoys) which form a square all the way to the finish line in Porto Vecchio – the total length of 13 nautical miles.

There’s plenty of events happening in Trieste in the days leading up to the Barcolana sailing regatta, which traditionally takes place on the second Sunday in October. The campsite is only a few kilometers away, a local bus runs several times a day (30 minutes’ drive) and you can see all the action from the campsite’s plateau.

The campsite is also ideally located if you decide on a hike along the Rilke Trail, which takes about an hour from the campsite to Duino Castle (open every day from 9:30 to 17:00, closed on Tuesdays), where you can also visit a museum. Tickets for the museum are €11 for adults, €6 for children (age 7-14), €8.50 for seniors and students.

Another scenic hiking trail (also suitable for mountain bikes) is the Napoleon’s road (Strada Napoleonica) above the gulf of Trieste which stretches from the Obelisco di Opicina to the village of Prosecco (the name should ring a bell among wine lovers). It’s a circular hike of about 15 km that takes you along the coast and through the forests. We recommend stopping at the spectacular modern Temple of Monte Grisa. And if you choose to divert from the trail and descent to the shore you will end up at another architectural gem: the amazing Miramare Castle.

We also recommend a hike to the beach in Sistiana, which is below the campsite Mare Pineta (15 minutes’ walk), and further on to the picturesque town of Portopiccolo (30 minutes’ walk), which is set in a former quarry and has a beautiful marina.
