PELJEŠAC BRIDGE – FASTER JOURNEY TO DUBROVNIK AND KORČULA

After a full 4 years of construction, the Pelješac Bridge was officially opened on Tuesday, July 26 2022, and after all-day festivities, Rimac Nevera, the fastest electric car in the world, was the first car to cross the bridge. From 11 p.m., July 26 2022, the bridge is open to all traffic. The bridge is extremely important for the residents of Dalmatia, but also for all tourists, who will find it easier and faster to travel to the southernmost part of Croatia.

Until now, everyone who traveled to Dubrovnik, Pelješac peninsula, the island of Korčula or another southern Dalmatian island had to leave Croatia, drive through BiH to get to the very south. Now, driving on the new road and the Pelješac Bridge, traveling through BiH is not necessary, and the journey to Orebić on Pelješac will be reduced by 45 minutes, from where the ferry to the island of Korčula departs.

Important information for everyone who will travel on the bridge is that no toll for driving on the bridge is paid. And it will stay that way. Thus, the ferry ride from Ploče – Trpanj to get to Pelješac, without driving through BiH, will no longer be necessary.

The bridge will certainly be a new tourist attraction, both for numerous passengers who can enjoy the view of the bridge and from it, as well as for boaters, who will find sailing under the bridge extremely interesting.

The bridge is intended for traffic exclusively by vehicles that can reach a speed of more than 60 km/h, and it is forbbiden traffic for pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles that can’t develop a speed of more than 60 km/h. The purpose of stopping traffic lane on the Pelješac Bridge is exclusively for emergency case and it’s forbidden to be used for the purpose of photography.

The Pelješac Bridge is 2,404m long and 55m high. It bridges the Maloston Bay and connects the towns of Komarna and Brijesta on the Pelješac peninsula. The main designer was Marjan Pipenbaher, and the contractor was China Road and Bridge Corporation. It was built in the period from April 23 2018 until January 27 2022, and it is officially open for traffic on July 26 2022. The construction of the bridge cost 418 million euros, and 85% of the eligible costs were co-financed from the funds of the European Union. The bridge and parts of the access roads are operational from 26 July 2022 and the entire major project is expected to be completed by end November, 2023 when the last phase, the Ston bypass, will be finalized.
